Cooperative Writing

Cooperative writing is any sort of group activity that requires more than one person to write a finished product. Cooperative writing strategies help students gain confidence in their writing, practice writing skills with their peers, and see new ways of using language from their classmates. Some research suggests that students create better writing in groups than on their own!

Cooperative Writing Activities

All units in the Vista program have writing practice. Turn one of those practices into cooperative writing with one of these activities!

  • Cooperative drawings: Students take turns adding to a drawing. When time is up, students can write a story about what they’ve drawn, label it with English words, or describe it to a partner.
  • Chain stories: Students write a piece of a story and then pass their paper to a group member, who continues the story.
  • Sticky chats: Give students a question to “discuss” – but instead of talking, they respond through writing on sticky notes.
