The Sons of the Utah Pioneers sponsor this opportunity. This program invites fourth-grade students to write an essay or create a project concerning an incident in the life of one of their pioneer ancestors, or an incident or feature of early Utah history. The pioneer life program is open to students in all fourth-grade classes in the Provo City School District.  At the discretion of the teacher, students may submit essays or some other creative project portraying pioneer life. All projects must be the student’s original work.

As a school, projects will be judged for the top three projects, which will go on to represent the school at the district level. The school may determine how projects will be judged. The top three winners from each school will be given a Certificate of Accomplishment. Winning projects are due to the district Office (c/o Christine Whatcott, District Language Arts Curriculum Specialist) by Friday, April 28, 2023. Projects must include the written description/reflection and entry form.

Three students will be chosen as winners from the District. These students, with their parents and teacher, will be guests at the May 18, 2023 dinner meeting of the Brigham Young Chapter of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers, where they will each be given a framed Certificate of Excellence and a $50 award. The teachers of the three District winners will also each receive a $50 award.
