Students of color disproportionately experience unfair discipline practices that remove them from the classroom, exacerbated by school policing and lack of investments in care and trauma-informed approaches. Research on this topic often focuses on boys, overlooking Latina students who make up 20 percent of school suspensions nationally. While research shows that having educators of color in schools can serve as a protective factor for students experiencing disproportionate school discipline practices, increasing the number of Latinx teachers in schools is a key strategy to help ensure that schools are safe places for girls to heal and thrive. Join us for a conversation about how recruiting and supporting Latinx teachers can help mitigate the criminalization of Latina students and close discipline gaps.
