The BYU Biology Department will be hosting a professional development event for Biology Teachers in the CITES partnership districts, titled “Exploration as a Way of Understanding Evolution.” In partnership with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, we have invited Dr. John Hawks of the University of Wisconsin – Madison, a world-famous anthropologist and co-discoverer of Homo naledi, to present at BYU. In conjunction with this event, we will be hosting Secondary Biology Teachers on Wednesday, March 13th from 5pm-9pm.
Space is limited to 50 participants so we would encourage you to get the word out as quickly as possible. The evening will be presented in 3 parts:
5pm – 6pm: Reconciling Faith and Science – Biology and Seminary teachers will have the opportunity to join in a discussion about helping students reconcile what they are learning in the science classroom with religious beliefs. (We recognize there are limitations to what teachers can discuss, but feel this will provide a foundation and awareness as issues come up.)
6 pm – 7 pm: Dinner hosted by BYU catering
7 pm – 9 pm: Interactive Workshop on Human Evolution – Teachers will learn how to use exploration as a tool to teach evolution. They will participate in hands-on activities using 3D models, skull casts, and more.
Stipend: We are offering each attendee a $100 stipend for attending the event. State licensure credit will also be available.
