In the month of December 2024 the Fine Arts Curriculum Review Committee, the Math Curriculum Review Committee, and the Literacy Committee met. Review summaries of those meetings below.
The Fine Arts Curriculum Review Cycle Committee met on December 16, 2024. During the meeting, teachers reviewed the Phase 1 and Phase 2 documents to ensure alignment with the committee’s current direction. Each artform group provided updates on their progress, including identifying priority standards, key vocabulary and concepts, vetted resources, student expectations, and AVID/WICOR connections for secondary levels. Time was allocated for each artform group to continue developing these instructional materials resource documents.
The committee also reviewed secondary fine arts PCSD data from the Arts Education Data Project. In Utah, this platform collects and presents data on arts education statewide, reporting student participation and identifying trends over time. The meeting concluded with a brief video showcasing the fine arts in PCSD.
The Math Curriculum Review Committee met together on December 16, 2024, and discussed the need for a balanced math instruction approach, balancing step-by-step procedural learning with creative, open-ended tasks. The importance of tailoring instruction to meet student needs and teacher preferences was emphasized. The committee reviewed and discussed a research article regarding building conceptual mathematical understanding with a goal to consider how the research could be applied to improve and expand math instructional practices across the district. The conversation highlighted the need for flexibility in curricula to effectively meet diverse student and teacher needs.
The secondary literacy committee discussed our next steps for the implementation of StudySync, including a teacher needs assessment and an assignment teachers will participate in during the second semester. A final draft of the supplementary novels approval process was discussed and reviewed for submission and approval by the board.
