USBE has a RISE Mathematics Item Writer Workshop for grades 3–8 on January 29, 30, and 31. Below are more details about the workshop. Math Item Writer Workshop—Marriott University Park, Salt Lake City, UT

Participants write drafts for items and clusters that will be administered in future RISE assessments. The training at the beginning of the item writing workshop covers all necessary aspects of item writing, such as:

  • Alignment to the Utah Core Standards
  • Grade-level appropriateness
  • DOK/cognitive complexity of the item as compared with the complexity of the standard Content accuracy
  • Interaction type and appropriateness (e.g., how the student responds)
  • Potential bias or sensitivity issues
    • CAI content specialists facilitate these reviews and include USBE content specialists in all meetings

Meeting Information:

The sessions will be held at Marriott University Park in Salt Lake City. Breakfast is served at 8:00 AM, and the session begins at 8:30 AM. We will work until approximately 4:00 p.m. In addition to breakfast, lunch is provided.

Participants traveling at least 50 miles one way (100 miles round trip) qualify for lodging at the Marriott University Park (480 Wakara Way, Salt Lake City, UT) starting the evening before the meeting (January 28th), with checkout on the last day of meetings (January 31st). Hotel check-in is at 4:00 PM, and check-out is at noon. Participants staying at the hotel will receive an additional dinner stipend of $20 for Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday nights.

Stipend and Reimbursement Groups:

Group 1

Current contracted classroom educators who will require a substitute and are not taking personal time off for the meeting. The school or district will receive $120 for substitute compensation, and the participant will receive mileage reimbursement at the following rate:

  • Distance from Event (one-way) Daily Rate (Qualifying Travel Costs)
    • 0-50 miles: $35
    • 51-100 miles: $70
    • 101-150 miles: $90
    • 151-200 miles: $110
    • 201-250 miles: $130
    • 251-300 miles: $145
    • 301-350 miles: $165

Group 2

Current school or district employees who will not require a substitute and are not taking personal time off for the meeting The participant will receive reimbursement at the following rate:

  • Distance from Event (one-way) Daily Rate (Qualifying Travel Costs)
    • 0-50 miles: $35
    • 51-100 miles: $70
    • 101-150 miles: $90
    • 151-200 miles: $110
    • 201-250 miles: $130
    • 251-300 miles: $145
    • 301-350 miles: $165

Group 3

Current contracted classroom educators or school/district employees who are taking personal time off for the meeting and participants who are not currently on contract with a Utah school or district Payment will go to the participant at the following rate:

  • Distance from Event (one-way) Daily Rate (Qualifying Travel Costs and Stipend)
    • 0-50 miles: $230
    • 51-100 miles: $280
    • 101-150 miles: $300
    • 151-200 miles: $320
    • 201-250 miles: $340
    • 251-300 miles: $355
    • 301-350 miles: $375
